Peter began teaching English at Dexter Regional High School in 1983 and has been a teacher and coach there for the last 42 years. He retired as basketball coach last season after 40 years and is the winningest basketball coach in the school’s history. In addition to coaching basketball at Dexter, he has also coached soccer and tennis, each for over 30 years. In 1983, Peter started the girl’s soccer program at DRHS and served as its first coach. After 17 years with the girl’s program, he switched over to the boy’s program where he spent the next 13 years and helped the Tigers to 2 titles before stepping down in 2014. In addition to his teaching and coaching duties at DRHS, he currently serves on the board of directors of the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame and is a member of the Maine Principals Association’s Basketball Commission. In 2017, Peter was elected as an ad-hoc member to the executive board of the National High School Coaches Association (NHSBCA), a position he still holds today. Karen, his wife of 40 years and the daughter of 2018 Maine Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Bill Obermeyer, has been one of the most vocal supporters of the Dexter boy’s basketball teams over the years. His son Matthew and daughter Sarah, who both graduated from Dexter are coaching and teaching at Maine schools today.
