Johnnie B. “Hawk” Carter, is the Executive Director, of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, one of the largest organizations of its kind in the United States, and a proud member of the National HS Basketball Coaches Association.
Prior to becoming Executive Director, he served as the Assistant Director to the great Rick Sherley, a Court of Honor member himself, who is now one of the assistant directors. While serving as assistant director for ten years, Carter became very involved with the NHSBCA in helping to grow the game and enhancing high school basketball coaches throughout the nation. He is a member of the NHSBCA Executive Board. He is the director of both the TABC Boy’s and Girl’s Showcases which had over 500 scholastic teams participate between them, last year.
Carter spent 36 years in education before retiring in 2014. Prior to joining TABC, he served as the Director of Athletic Servies for Aldine ISD, head basketball coach at Cushing HS, Forest Brook HS, Aldine MacArthur HS, Lufkin HS, Alief Hastings HS, and Texas College, compiling over 500 wins, with numerous Coach of the Year Awards and play-off appearances. He taught English, Health, Physical Education and served as an Assistant Principal, during his career. He was a founding member of the Houston Area Basketball Coaches Association.
A graduate of Carthage (TX) HS, he was an all-conference basketball player at East Texas Baptist University, where he received his BS degree, with a Major in Health/Physical Education, and a Minor in English. He was selected Who’s Who in Poetry in American Colleges and Universities, two consecutive years and a winner of the prestigious Era Reynolds Miller Creative Writing Award, twice. He received a Masters of Science degree from Grambling State University, while serving as a Graduate Assistant and President of the Graduate Faculty Council, a Masters of Education degree from Texas Southern University, in Educational Leadership, and his Principal’s Certification, also, from Texas Southern University.
He has been inducted into the Texas HS Basketball Hall of Fame, the Houston Area Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, the East Texas Baptist University Hall of Fame, the Carthage HS Hall of Fame, and he was named a “Coach Who Makes A Difference”, in the state of Texas, after performing CPR and reviving one of his players during a practice session. He is a Lifetime member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and a Certified Athletic Administrator. An award-winning poet, he is a member of the Poetry Society of Texas and the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. He is also a song writer with several of his Gospel songs registered with the US Copyright Office and the Library of Congress. He and his wife, Carmen, have four children and four grandchildren.
