Ed Kershner is recognized as one of the greats of Florida High School basketball. Ed’s career record of 901-377 is unmatched. 783 wins are in the state of Florida. His coaching career began in 1971 in Ed’s home state of Indiana. Ed served as head coach at four different high schools in Indiana until he moved to Kissimmee in 1980.

Ed was the head basketball coach and athletic director at Osceola High School until 1990. The Cowboys won a state championship in 1983, a team that was ranked No. 3 nationally and had a record of 37-0. Ed moved to St. Lucie County in 1990, coaching at Port St Lucie and Fort Pierce Westwood for 6 years. In 1996, he moved to Oviedo where he roamed the sidelines for 21 years. He is a three-time State Coach of the Year and was the McDonald's All-American coach and National High School Coaches Association “National Coach of the Year” in 1985. He was named one of the Top 10 Florida Coaches of All Time by the Orlando Sentinel.

Ed is a founding father of the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches. He was inducted into the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. He is also in the Florida Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame, the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Court of Legends, and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

A leader in every respect, Ed served the Florida Athletic Coaches as its basketball chairman and a member of the Board of Directors from 1994-2001 and served as its president for the 2006-2007 school year. He has been a member of the FHSAA’s basketball advisory committee and the basketball evaluators committee. He was past President of the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches. He is the first Florida coach to be chosen for the NHSBCA Court of Honor. Ed has been an advocate for the advancement of the girls’ game of basketball in Florida.

Ed was a four-year starter at Florida Southern University and the Mocs MVP as a junior and senior. He met his wife, Joyce, at FSC. She has never missed a game, which might also be a record. Ed was drafted into the Army before he completed his degree. After two years of service, which included playing and coaching for armed services all-star teams, he returned to Indiana, finished his schooling at Taylor University and began coaching. Ed received his Master’s degree from St. Francis University in Fort Wayne.
